Minnesota Bike Atlas, 7th Edition – Available Soon!

I received my advance copy of the Minnesota Bike Atlas, 7th Edition the other day. (Disclosure: one of my maps is in it.) It’s a very nice book whose proceeds help support the work of Hostelling International – Minnesota and the Twin Cities Bicycle Club, and has lots of easy-to-use maps in it. New this year is a CD of the routes.

HI-MN will be distributing it via local book shops shortly, and it’ll also be available at the Minnesota Ironman Bicycle Ride on April 27. Note for those who have not done the ride previously that this is not an Ironman like a triathlon – it’s Ironman like ‘are you ready for a long freakin’ ride at the end of April when the weather could be agony or ecstasy?’ Last year’s weather was perfect, although it was the first time in 10 years I didn’t attend – I had gotten married the day before and wearing heels on grassy lawns all day did a real number on my calves. We can only hope for such weather this year, although once again I shan’t be riding, only volunteering.

  1. I just ordered my copy of the atlas! From the description it looks like it is primarily suggested routes plotted by contributors… does it also include a comprehensive list of bike trails (i.e. at state parks, or intercity trails such as the “Gateway Trail”, etc)? If not, do you have any recommendations of supplemental material?

  2. Jason, the Atlas does contain a lot of info about trails in (mostly) Minnesota. In terms of supplemental material, it’s hard to slice everything together, but my suggestions include:

    – most counties have some sort of county ‘bicycle map’ that can be requested from the county. I have copies of Dakota, Hennepin, and Anoka’s. I don’t know if Ramsey or Washington offer them, but I’d suspect yes. These show some of the city-level facilities as well as county and state.
    – The state parks website at http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/recgrid.html has info on state park trails.
    – Little Transport Press/Bike Everywhere do a very good map of the Twin Cities including road and trail routes: http://bikeverywhere.com/mn/
    – The ‘Fred’s Best Guides: Twin Cities Bicycling’ is available at most bookstores and is also a good atlas with trail maps included.

  3. Hi,
I would like to order a copy of this atlas. I am not a TCBC member but am a LOON member (TCTC – tandem culb). The order form does not say the shipping cost for a non-TCBC member. How much should I make the check for so it includes the shipping cost?

  4. Try ordering online:

The Atlas has its own web site!
